Before anything is written, there is a quieter, slower, less visible kind of work. This preliminary work doesn’t announce itself but shapes everything that comes after, setting the stage for what is to be written.

Writing doesn’t begin on the page. It starts in what you notice, what stays with you, what unsettles you, and won’t let go. It’s in the accumulation of experience, the feel of a place, the conversations you can’t shake, and the recurring images. Writing starts with attention, memory, and the emotional residue of living.

By the time you sit down to write, something essential has already been forming beneath the surface, often unnoticed, but ready to emerge.

The Writing Lab isn’t about format or structure. There are places for that; this isn’t one of them. This is about learning to see, to sit with a moment until you understand what it holds, to translate that into something others can feel. It’s about writing from memory, place, emotional truth, and the lived textures of a world not always on the page.

To write meaningfully, you must know what it means to have a point of view. You must trust your instincts before smoothing them into something ‘correct.’ That takes time. You can’t rush it, shortcut it, or borrow someone else’s voice.

I came into this work as an independent filmmaker. That means I never had the luxury of waiting for perfect conditions, and in truth, there are no perfect conditions.

I wrote and created from what I had. I used what was around me and what mattered so much I couldn’t look away.

Projects like For Colored Boys came from urgency and the need to explore Black male identity. I wanted to explore vulnerability, contradiction, and interior life honestly and openly. This kind of writing doesn’t come from trying to be clever. It comes from staying with something real, even when it’s uncomfortable.

The same is true for The Creed.

That film is about grief and the specific weight of loss. It held the tension that settles in a relationship after something unthinkable happens. There was no clear way forward, no easy solution. Just two people carrying something too heavy, trying to keep standing. I had to stay in that emotional space long enough to understand what the characters carried, how they held it, and how it might quietly push them to act.

The work is not just coming up with an idea, but staying with it long enough to understand it.

Writing from that place requires a different discipline. Not discipline of a schedule or word count, but the discipline of honesty. You have to be honest with yourself about what you’re drawn to and what you’re avoiding. Notice what you circle without landing on. Pay attention to the details that seem small but do the heaviest storytelling. The glance, the pause, the unsaid thing that fills the room. Trust specificity. Know that the more precise you are, the more your work lives inside someone else.

Because people don’t connect to complexity for its own sake. They connect to experience.

As a director, I come to writing from a different angle. Transitioning to episodic television changes my role: I’m not writing the script, but I’m deeply engaged with what’s on the page. I know immediately when a script is alive.

Reading the first season of Cross, I find clarity, rhythm, and a sense of character and world that activates something in me before I’ve pictured a single frame. It gives me a blueprint, not in a rigid, prescriptive way, but as good writing does, it opens up space and tells me how the story breathes.

Everything starts with this work before the work.

The tone, the pacing, the emotional architecture - it all begins with what’s written. This foundation is key: when the writing is strong, it creates a kind of alignment across the entire process, a through-line that holds everything together. It allows the actors to go deeper. It allows the camera to move with intention rather than decoration. It allows the work to feel cohesive because it was grounded in something true from the very beginning.

So even when I’m not the writer, I’m responding to writing that understands itself.

What lives inside The Director’s Notebook Writing Lab reflects all of this. Sometimes it will be essays like this one - reflections on process, memory, and on what it actually means to develop a voice that belongs to you. Other times, it will be exercises designed to help you reconnect with your instincts and break out of your own head. Sometimes, it will be scene work, or a closer look at how character, environment, and emotional stakes move on the page. And occasionally, it will simply be writing that is trying to hold something - without forcing it into a neat conclusion, without resolving what isn’t ready to be resolved.

Because writing is not just about getting something done. It’s about becoming someone who can do it with clarity and intention.

It takes a lot of courage to tell the truth.
